How to Get Great Lighting for Your Business Video (in Harsh Daylight).

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

Getting great lighting for your business video is essential to achieving a high-quality, professional look. However, it can be difficult to get good lighting when filming during daylight hours. The sun is often too bright and the cameras have low dynamic range, causing harsh shadows and glare. In this blog post, we'll give you some tips on how to get great lighting for your business video during a harsh daylight situation.

1.Use Reflectors

One way to combat the harshness of the sun is to use reflectors. Reflectors are placed in front of or behind the subject matter and reflect light back onto the subject, filling in shadows and reducing glare. You can purchase reflectors at most camera stores or online.

2. Move Your Camera or position the subject so that the sun is behind them. This makes the sun a backlight, putting the subject’s face in shadow and will help to create more evenly lit shot without any harsh shadows. By experiment with different angles and positions, you should be able to find the perfect balance of lighting for your business video.

3. Use diffusers, like large overhead silks

Another option is to use diffusers. Diffusers are placed between the sun and your subjects and diffuse (or soften) the light coming from the sun. This helps reduce shadows and eliminates glare. You can purchase diffusers at most camera stores or online. Don’t forget to use sandbags! Those large silks turn into huge sails during high winds!

4. Film in the Shade

If purchasing film gear is not an option, film in the shade. This will help reduce the amount of harsh sunlight hitting your subjects directly. If you can't film in the shade, try to position your subjects so that they're not facing directly into the sun.

5. Wait for Golden Hour

If possible, wait until Golden Hour to film your business video. Golden Hour is the period of time shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the natural light is softer and more flattering. This is an ideal time to film because you won't have to worry about harsh sunlight creating shadows or glare.

Here's another article over at InVideo that talks more about this.

Conclusion:

First, try using reflectors to bounce light back onto your subjects and fill in shadows. Second, if possible, film in the shade or position your subjects so they're not facing directly into the sun. Third, you can use diffusers to soften the light coming from the sun and reduce shadows and glare. fourth, try adding a filter to your camera lens to reduce brightness without affecting color balance .
